Autism Mental Health Counselling is an up to 6-month service offered to serve young people aged 6-17 who live with autism and face mental health difficulties. Intended outcomes include supporting children and youth in responding to mental health concerns and supporting parents in supporting their children. The Autism Mental Health Counselling service aims to support:

  • Individuals with autism with a co-occurring mental health concern and their families.
  • Individuals with autism who can participate in a counselling conversation, have an interest to engage in counselling and have a goal.
  • Families that live in East Toronto and East York
  • Clients do not need an OAP number to be eligible for service.
  • Clients can be in the process of seeking a diagnosis.

This program offers psychotherapy and counselling, as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing evidence informed services. The therapist may explore thoughts, emotions and relationships with the child and family. The therapist provides individualized services to clients and their families through service coordination and case management when needed, by liaising with internal/external partners.

Clients presenting with a high-risk level, high severity of issues, and/or high level of conflict may not be eligible for the service. Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis with manager input on the most appropriate ways to proceed and support the referred client.
